What wins a stage, and what ends a run

Protect the headquarters at the bottom of the field while eliminating the stage's enemy tanks. The enemy reserve display tells you that more tanks can still arrive even when the screen looks quiet. A stage ends after the enemy force has been cleared; destroying the headquarters ends the run. Losing a tank spends a life, so preserve both your position and your remaining lives.

Do not use the number of tanks currently on screen as a completion counter. Keep guarding the base until the game itself moves to the tally or next-stage screen.

A safer opening in three moves

  1. Read the bottom half first. Find every corridor that ends near the base. Plan the shortest return route before moving forward.
  2. Open a firing lane, not every wall. Removing one obstruction may help you intercept enemies; flattening all the cover can expose home from a distance.
  3. Take one engagement at a time. Face the lane before shooting, then move out of an incoming line rather than racing a bullet head-on.

When unsure, retreat toward a position that covers an approach to home. Advancing to the top edge has little value if it leaves no way to intercept an enemy already below you.

Read the tally instead of inventing a target

The game awards points for destroyed enemies and shows a stage-end breakdown. Enemy classes can carry different values, and bonuses can affect your total. Use that tally to check what happened during a run rather than treating every enemy as equally valuable.

BattleCityPlay does not upload scores or operate a global leaderboard. Tank 1990 variants can change rules, so this guide does not promise a specific extra-life threshold for every lettered mode. A saved snapshot records the emulated run, not a verified competition score.

A useful practice loop

Play one opening slowly. Notice the first route an enemy takes toward home, then try again while covering that lane earlier. On the next attempt, change just one decision: where you turn, which brick you remove or when you collect a bonus.

Use a manual save before an unfamiliar situation if you want to practise it. Do not overwrite the only snapshot you intend to keep. For co-op, assign one player to intercept and one to cover the return path; see the two-player guide.
