Know the version before you play

Home, Online and NES run Tank 1990, a Battle City modification with a lettered TANK menu. The 1985 page runs original Battle City (Japan). The 35-stage atlas describes the original edition. The two editions keep separate manual browser saves.

A small controller, deliberate decisions

The NES-style control layout has a direction pad, two action buttons, Select and Start. Our first-player mapping uses arrows, Z/X, V and Enter. It gives each action a clear role without requiring a keyboard full of shortcuts.

Movement is along four directions. Turn into a lane before firing, leave room to retreat and avoid cutting a direct firing channel to your own base. A controller can be mapped through the emulator's Control Settings; button labels differ between physical controllers.

Pixels, sound and the browser

FCEUmm emulates the cartridge in your browser. The core's NES video is scaled into the reserved game area rather than stretched to fill every available pixel. Fullscreen can make aiming easier, but a larger window does not increase the game's native detail.

The site's Pause and local Save controls sit outside the original game. They are conveniences of this web player, not features added to the cartridge. If fullscreen is unavailable on your phone, try landscape orientation and keep the touch controls visible.

What carries over from Battle City

The central idea is unchanged: defeat the enemy force while keeping your headquarters intact. Destroying an enemy far up the screen is not a win if another has already lined up a shot at home. Start with our base-defence guide, then compare the version notes in Battle City versus Tank 1990.
